POMPEII: The Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii’s Sanctuary
The Pompeii’s sanctuary was built by Bartolo Longo and is located in a square which is named to him. It is one of the greatest centers of Marian devotion in Italy. On 8 May and the first Sunday of October welcomes hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world to celebrate the Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii: this prayer written by Bartolo Longo is transmitted by radio and tv around the world.
MERCOGLIANO: The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montevergine
It is located in the Avellino’s province and it’s the third place of Marian faith most visited in Italy. It has a very ancient history, dating back to the early centuries of Christianity. The church was built by the Roman architect Florestano di Fausto with a typical romanesque style with three naves. For centuries a lot of pilgrimages have been organized to pray the Blessed Virgin Mary of God, but also if you aren’t a christian you must visit this abbey for its history and its beauty.
MATERDOMINI: San Gerardo Maiella’s Sanctuary
He is one of the greatest saints in Church history. In his early age he was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and he was canonized by Pope Pius X in 1904.About 150 years after his premature death (29 years old) his memory is still alive especially in Materdomini, where his remains are preserved. In fact here it was built a sanctuary on his memory wich welcomes every year a large number of pilgrims from all over the world.
SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO: The Places of Padre Pio
Mainly the small town is a destination for religious pilgrimages because here there are a lot of places where Padre Pio lived and so many objects of him that you can see but there are also a lot of stunning architectural and cultural works .You can’t miss the Ancient Church where Padre Pio lived most of his years, and the window on the first floor from which every day he said good by to his followers. You can also visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built right next to the Old Church. Finally, you can visit the New San Pio Church, which has about 7,000 seats.
